Sounds of Barcelona Workshops: Sound Fictions

Sound Fictions workshops are up and running!
Next month, more than 300 high school students will have the opportunity to participate in workshops that merge sound, music and creativity with science.

Using technologies to produce, modify, play and record sounds, participants will transform a specific space of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra into other imaginary spaces: City of the Future, Amazon Rainforest, Neuronal Landscape and Curiosity on Mars.

In order to create and perform narrations in these sound spaces, participants use a variety of devices: the online database Freesound  synthesis software (Pure Data), synthesizers, microphones with effects modules, different objects and materials as well as their own bodies. The entire process is based on teamwork, open discussion and distribution of roles.

Each workshop is finalized with a recording of the transformed sound space, results are uploaded to the Freesound archive. Thus, Freesound’s sound map not only collects daily sounds from the UPF but also numerous Sound Fictions made and recorded in situ by the participants.

The project is made within the framework of the European program KiiCS (Knowledge Incubation in Innovation and Creation for Science) of the Observatori de la Comunicació Científica of the UPF, with the support of Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad , Ayuntamiento de Barcelona and Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología (FECYT).
